Competition entrants were also asked to write a commentary on the text, in English or German, referring both to the leaflet itself (its style and historical references) and their approach to translating it.\u00a0The winner of the 2020 White Rose Translation Competition is Jack Graveney (University of Cambridge).\u00a0I was delighted when\u00a0Dr Charlotte Ryland agreed to judge the entries to this new competition. Charlotte is \u2014 among many other things \u2014\u00a0Director of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stephen-spender.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stephen Spender Trust<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.queens.ox.ac.uk\/translation-exchange\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Translation Exchange<\/a>\u00a0at the University of Oxford. She has published and edited several translations including most recently Brecht&#8217;s unfinished play\u00a0<em>The Real Life of Jacob Trotalong <\/em>(<em>Das wirkliche Leben des Jakob Gehherda<\/em>).\u00a0Find out more about Charlotte&#8217;s important and exciting work on her <a href=\"http:\/\/charlotteryland.co.uk\">website<\/a>. On judging this year&#8217;s White Rose Project Translation Competition, Charlotte comments:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>All entrants to the competition coped admirably with a text that is full of traps for the translator, while rising to the challenge of reproducing 1940s rhetoric. The winning translation stood out for its inventive phrasing (the officers &#8216;bailed out&#8217;, lives were &#8216;at stake&#8217;)\u00a0and its readiness to stretch and remould the original syntax in order to fit the new idiom.
