Students Translation

Introducing our Translators

In July 2018 we issued a call for translators, inviting students at the University of Oxford to apply for a place on the White Rose Translation Project. Applicants were asked to submit a short statement outlining why they would like to be involved, and to translate an extract from the third White Rose leaflet:  ‘Viele, vielleicht die meisten Leser dieser Blätter sind sich darüber nicht klar, wie sie einen Widerstand ausüben sollen. Sie sehen keine Möglichkeiten. Wir wollen versuchen, ihnen zu zeigen, daß ein jeder in der Lage ist, etwas beizutragen zum Sturz dieses Systems.’

We had a number of very strong submissions and fifteen students from ten colleges were selected to participate: Zoë Aebischer, Sophie Bailey, Ilona Clayton, Ro Crawford, Pauline Gümpel, Eve Mason, Louise Mayer-Jacquelin, Adam Mazarelo, Tim Powell, Finn Provan, Poppy Robertson, Emily Rowland, Harry Smith, Amy Wilkinson, and Madeleine Williamson-Sarll.

The students have already met for their first session, during which they discussed the background to the White Rose leaflets, translation theory, and the aims of their translation. They will work on the texts both independently and as part of the group over the course of Michaelmas and Hilary terms.
